I have had this product for a couple of years. The spout started to melt. I made coffee yesterday morning and when I went to pour it, the top separated from the bottom spilling hot coffee all over. Lucky thing I wasn't scalded. Not a very safe product.

 "Need a replacement" 2009-12-10
By Joe Krotick (Pa.)
They don't make things like they used to. New percolators come with junk for glass tops. You have to keep replacements around. This one will work. But you might as well buy a couple, because surely you'll need to replace the replacement. My mother has my Grandmother and Great Grandmothers percolators. The tops on those are old and you could tell its of great quality. No room for pride and quality in todays industry. Quick, cheep, and easy. Thats the way of the present and future.

Although the price is right, these tops break quite easily. You cannot pull the top of the coffee pot off using this top as I have broken 4 of them already by doing so. So, if you can remember NOT to pull the top off with this glass piece, you'll be fine!

 "Prospective Buyers Beware" 2009-10-31
By G. S. Hall (Highland, Md USA)
This top is marketed as fitting Farberware electric percolators. They show it conjoined in the picture as a suggested option leaving the impression that it fits, is functional and possibly improves appearance. The Farberware electric percolator that I recently bought through Amazon has a top lid with no opening - completely solid. Thus, if the glass top being marketed here fit at all, which it does not, all it could ever be is decorative. This is a very annoying product misrepresentation; the blame should be borne equally by the vendor and Amazon for not adequately researching the compatibility of items they market together.

the original plastic percolator top broke long ago,and the plastic replacement was cracked and leaking. I wanted to replace it expecting another plastic top ( which I knew was going to crack eventually). So I was surprised when I saw that a GLASS top was available. I was a little worried if it would fit, work well etc. But it works PERFECTLY. My pot is the Farberware.I highly recommend this.!!!!!

 "Good coffee" 2009-08-22
By Suzanne K. Goldstein
I like my coffee stronger than many people, and metal/electric pots just are not up to the task. I am a firm believer in glass coffee-pots, and the Modelco makes a great cup of coffee. There is no oily residue - you can watch the coffee brew (not boil) - the odor is incredibly inviting.

My only concern is the plastic bubble in the middle of the lid. I have 7 of these pots (glass chips/breaks, so I always have replacements ready), and the lid-bubbles have all cracked and leaked. I have been unsuccessful in finding replacements. I suggest that the manufacturer return to the old-fashioned glass bubble. Other than that, I love my Modelco(s) and recommend this product to all coffee drinkers.

I wanted to go back to a percolator but the electric ones were pricey. So I did a search and found the modelco 8 cup. The price was right and all the reviews I read were promising. So I got it. I am so glad I did. It makes a great cup of coffee. The drawbacks? Takes a while for the water to get hot enough to percolate so I suggest putting the coffee on first then go about doing your morning routine. When you are done so is the coffee. Also be sure to have course ground coffee to put in the basket, and it is glass so you have to take care not to bang it up too much. Be sure to use the little metal trivet for electric stoves.

"Attractive, convenient, easy to use, brews delicious coffee." 2009-09-29
By Cynthia Danute Cekauskas, LCSW (Savannah, Georgia)
I wish I would have thought to check Amazon.com before my husband and I drove all over town trying to find a non-electric coffee percolator. This became an issue when our Gevalia automatic electric coffee maker broke down and no longer worked.I recalled having a Revereware percolator years ago that did not need to be plugged into something to brew coffee. So we drove to Dillards, Target, Walmart, JC Penneys, Kohls, K-Mart and Sears. Only K-Mart and Sears even carried non-electric coffee percolators in our area! I was disappointed at the quality of the K-Mart non-electric coffee maker so I finally settled for the ONLY other choice: the Sears Copco Stovetop Percolator and it has been simply WONDERFUL to use. I don't NEED a 12-cup coffee maker nor an expensive one to brew myself some coffee every morning. The Copco allows me to brew just six cups, is convenient, easy to use and the coffee tastes great. What is more, unlike some coffee percolators, you don't even need a paper filter to use the Copco. Next time, however, I would save myself a trip and some gas and order something like this, which may be hard to find, through Amazon.com.

 "Makes a Superb Espresso-type coffee" 2009-11-26
By P. Williams (Canada)
I have both the 2 cup and the 4 cup versions which work similarly, both producing great-tasting crema/espresso-type coffees in around 3 minutes. The 2-cup gives just under 3 oz (perfect for my 3 oz espresso cups) and the 4-cup gives just under 6 oz when filled with water (as recommended) to the line on the small plastic measuring cup provided. They will give the claimed 4 and 8 oz when their measuring cups are filled to the top. This is STRONG espresso-type coffee which tastes great straight or as the base for a latte, cappuccino, or macchiato. The crema produced by the 2 cup model is especially creamy.

No wonder this is the method of choice for many Europeans who have at least one of these inexpensive and simple gadgets. Bialetti produces the best (I have kept 6 of the many mokka pots I have bought, and only one was not made by Bialetti). Just be sure to season the aluminum pot by making at least the suggested 3 pots of sacrificial coffee and do not use RO (reverse osmosis) water which can leach metals. These pots improve with age but the gaskets will need to be replaced when they become hard. Just be sure to rinse them thoroughly with hot water and dry them completely before reassembly and storage - and NEVER put them in the dishwasher.

These seem to work best with medium ground coffee leveled in the basket, but with NO pressure or tamping. Espresso grind works poorly, and only if the basket is slightly under-filled. In order to prevent leakage, it is essential to be meticulous when wiping all coffee grounds from the rim of the filter basket before firmly tightening the 2 main parts. Both sizes work fine on my smooth-top stove using a medium-low setting. Just be prepared for the noise it makes after about 3 or 4 minutes when the pressure builds to the point where the valve/weight lifts and the coffee is squirted out in a few seconds at around 200 F. Quick removal from heat is necessary, and will avoid burnt flavours. Be sure to have that espresso cup handy to capture the great-tasting crema. The well-designed large spout pours quickly and with no dribbling.

At first it seems as though there is a fair amount of work involved in producing an "espresso", but both speed and comfort-level improve rapidly with practice. I recently bought an expensive ($2300) super automatic espresso machine. I returned it within 2 days because the quality of the coffee produced was so inferior to that produced by my Brikkas.

Wikipedia defines espresso:

Caffè espresso, espresso, [expresso] is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water under pressure through finely ground coffee.

The above definition seems to include this preparation method, but "Espresso Experts" may claim that these Brikka pots (why does Amazon call them percolators???) are not true espresso. Either way, I DON"T CARE. I simply adore the coffee they produce.

 "Good expresso, questionable materials" 2009-11-02
By Terrillja
I had a 4 cup Brikka for one week before I forgot to put water in it and managed to melt the handle and top off. I will be getting a new one, however there are a few things that I feel should be addressed in the design. The handle is resin and can melt off, adding a metal core with the resin over-molded wouldn't be a huge amount of work but would make it more rugged and prevent the handle from coming off if you do as I did. The top window is useless. You're making hot coffee, which has steam, so the window is all steamed up the whole time. Why bother to put it in? It is also made of some sort of injection molded plastic, it doesn't feel like it would hold up well either, Bialetti needs to go back to the solid top. One noticeable plus for me is that the funnel the coffee goes in is stainless rather than the aluminum used in older moka pots, which makes it much easier to clean up.

The most important part- the coffee: It makes great coffee, lots of crema, no complaints there. Wait for the very audible pop as the pressure overcomes the weight of the stopper, take it off the heat and you have great expresso. I'm buying 2 more brikkas, one 2 cup and one 4 cup, the coffee is that good. A few poor material choices on the part of Bialetti, but overall a great leap over the moka.

 "I. Hate. This." 2009-07-12
By maxonfire (Boston, MA United States)
I joyfully used a Bialetti 2-cup for 15 years. No problem. I thought I was upgrading when I purchased the Brikka. But, consistently, only 1/2 the water brews. Also, it is virtually impossible to unscrew. If I tighten too much, it takes DAYS for me to unscrew it. If I don't tighten, the coffee leaks out of the center. I did everything recommended, from making startup brews, using the expensive Moka Illy coffee. To no avail. This coffeemaker hates me. And I hate it.

So far, it works fine. My housemate accidentally ran it dry and burned a pot, but other than some funky discoloration of the steel, it is intact, including the handle, which others have had problems with. Perhaps that was a design issue they have since changed? I am also very good about not using the handle to screw and unscrew the parts.

p.s.: I liked Davi Grant's hose idea, although I haven't tried it yet.

"Inexpensive and easy way to make a cappuccino" 2009-10-24
By Marco A. De Llano
The quality is just 'ok' as it is made in India rather than Italy and you can easily see it when you unpack it. The handle feels a bit cheap, the lid also looks like it could break if you ain't careful and the metal also has some defects.

But for the price it is rather excellent at what it does, which are espressos. You just fill it up with water, add you favorite coffee and in less than 5 minutes you are done!

If you do it properly the espresso it produces is great and you save quite a bit of money by avoiding the expensive options. And since I'm using it only for my personal morning and evening cups of cappuccino I don't see the point on spending $300 to $400 dollars on a big machine.

You are better of using that money on getting a high quality grinder, gourment coffee grains and some very nice Italian coffee cups or glasses.

 "Almost great." 2009-10-30
By A. R. Powers (Indianapolis)

I really enjoyed using this percolator for several weeks but it soon became evident that the lid was not well made.

It consists of a plastic top which screws into the steel lid. You can wash it without taking it apart, but it comes loose, so you pretty much have to clean the lid, gasket, and cutting edge which the top screws into. It only has a single thread which makes about one turn and so it wears out quickly.

At first blush, I expected this to last a few years, but apparently it wasn't meant to be used every day. Hopefully I will be able to get a new lid for this item, but I'd rather they sent me an improved model.

 "Coffe Pot" 2009-06-30
By Thomas J. D'Antonio (Fairfield, NJ, U. S. A.)
It's a good quality coffee pot, but it's so air tight that you must lift the lid a little to let air in while pouring so the coffe comes out freely. This could create a problem because the lid could fall off while pouring. That has not happened yet to me though. Also, it's a little tough to brew the full 12 cup capacity because as soon as it starts to perculate, the coffee shoots out the spout. You would have to have the flame on the stove just right for it not to happen. So I usually only brew 10 cups to prevent this from happening.

 "My favorite camp percolator" 2009-11-25
By microjoe
PROS: This pot is very sturdy, paint is high quality, strong handle, lid has a lip that if installed properly should not fall out. Has a nice chrome ring at the top of the pot where the lid fits in, a spot that is vulnerable to chip in most enamel pots. Also good for heating water for tea, hot chocolate, and dishes. I prefer percolators over drip coffeemakers. I have never had to replace a stove top percolator because it was broken, but have owned countless expensive drip coffeemakers. Breakable carafes, clock to reset, takes up counter-space, buttons to fuss with, filters to replace. My simple pot lasts years longer, and the clean-up and maintenance is simpler. Now you can buy paper filters for percolators, but I think that is a waste of money. Like a drip, there is a learning curve. This type of pot does not have a water marker for example. But there is a simple instruction sheet in the box. But for taste, I get a full bodied dark coffee, and I do not need to buy the high dollar coffee I used to buy to get the same robust flavor. My opinion anyway.

CONS: Many of the new percolator pots have strainer baskets that are really flimsy in design, including both the Coleman and the GSI brand. The real problem is the upright stem, it tilts over if you know what I mean. You can bend it back, but I worry it will break over time. If they improved the basket assembly with a heavier grade aluminum like they used to make, or a stainless steel basket, I think it would solve the problem. I replaced the upright stem and basket in mine with an old sturdy one from a old pot I found at a yard sale. Most stainless steel kitchen (non camp) models have a stainless basket. Also - For some weird reason, most of the manufacturers basket is the same size, no matter how big the pot is. Next issue, on models with the glass dome, some folks can break them. They sell replacements in 2 sizes at Amazon.com for less than a pack of paper filters. The good news is that Coleman will mail you a replacement dome for free if you break it, email them through their web site seems to be the best way to get this done. I am guessing they would also replace the filter?

TIPS: Wet the inside of the basket before you put grounds in, to help prevent grounds from going through the holes. Use a medium ground blend. If you plan to use it on a camp fire, soap the outside of the pot and let dry for a minute before placing on the fire, to prevent soot stains. If you do it every time, it will stay looking like new. Don't cram the coffee grounds down into the basket either. Some folks like to heat the water good and hot, and then put the basket in, I don't as that is a good way to get burned. This model comes in a nice box, I recommend you keep it if you camp with the pot, it makes a perfect storage box to avoid scratching the pot.

RECOMMENDATION: Great pot, my favorite of these for camp use actually. Coleman also sells a 12 cup and a 9 cup in this shape. The 12 cup is Stainless Steel, instead of enamel, but I do not know about the basket. I found matching cups, but shop around the third party sellers here to get the best price. Coleman's competitor GSI makes an 8 cup percolator in red or blue, but the lid is attached which is a nice feature.

Wonderful, simple way to brew a great cup of coffee. However what we originally thought was a mold mark in the glass knob turned out to be a crack, so we've had to buy replacement glass knobs. The basket and "insides" seem a little flimsy, but then I'm used to a 30 year old pot.

I'd like to know upfront if this was made in the USA or china. I always buy USA if I can.

I received my Coleman 14-Cup Coffee Enamelware Percolator and was impressed with the weight of the pot. However when I opened the lid, I was very dissapointed with the quality of the basket and stem. It came in slightly bent and I could understand this happening because of the cheap quality of the metal. The quality of the insert doesn't match the outside of the pot. I know that I will be searching for a replacement made more substantially.

"Nothing like coffee from a percolator" 2009-09-03
By Titanium Man (Southern California)
My last one survived over 20 years. That's why when we broke the glass top we decided to buy a new one. We shopped some of the local stores, and they only offered what we considered to be a second rate substitute. None of the competition could match the quality of construction, fit and finish that Coleman has put into this massive coffee pot. When I found it here on Amazon I was elated. Without being too verbose, I don't mind paying for a premium product. When my new one arrived, I was pleased to see that there had been no compromise in quality over the years, and my guess is that this one will last me two decades as well.

I know that it may sound kooky, but this thing makes the best coffee. In addition, it makes enough coffee the first time! This is my favorite thing to take camping.
